Volleyballers place fourth in Sibley East Invitational

It was a full day of volleyball for the Lady Wolverines Saturday as they spiked their way to fourth place honors in the Sibley East Invitational at Gaylord.

In six games of action, the Wolverines recorded two wins, two ties and two losses.

Sibley East fell to eventual champion Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop in the semifinals. In the third place game, the Wolverines were defeated by New Ulm.

The Wolverines defeated Glencoe-Silver Lake and Norwood Young America in Pool Play. They tied Nicollet and Springfield.

vs. New Ulm

Sibley East’s volleyballers appeared to run out of steam in the third place game as they fell to New Ulm 25-21, 25-20.

“Our effort was there but we just had a hard time maintaining intensity and focus as we fought fatigue,” Sibley East head coach Chip Wolverton said. “It was a long day and a long homecoming week for the girls.”

Missy Trebesch and Dani Stien led Sibley East against the Eagles with six kills apiece. Abby Anderson and Tara Dietz added 14 and 12 digs respectively.

vs. GFW

An exciting game one wasn’t enough for Sibley East in the semifinals as the Lady Wolverines lost to eventual champion Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 25-20, 25-16.

As a team, the Wolverines were 36 of 38 from the service line.

Andrea Bauer led the Sibley East net game with seven kills while Tara Dietz contributed nine set assists and 14 digs.

vs. Nicollet

Sibley East appeared to have it on cruise control in its final pool play game. The Lady Wolverines remained unbeaten in pool play with a 25-15, 25-12 victory over Norwood Young America.

“Starting with game two against Springfield, this was our best stretch of the day,” coach Wolverton said. “The girls played very well.”

Tara Dietz and Abby Anderson were a combined 27 of 27 from the service line. Dietz also recorded an ace serve.

Seniors Dani Stien and Andrea Bauer added six kills apiece for the Wolverines.

vs. Springfield

Sibley East split a pair of games with Springfield in its third pool play game. The Wolverines dropped game one 25-12 but bounced back with a 25-22 victory in game two.

Seniors Andrea Bauer and Missy Trebesch combined for ten kills in the contest.

Kaili Schwirtz was among the statistical leaders for Sibley East. She was 9 of 10 serving with one ace. The senior also led the Wolverines with nine set assists.

vs. Glencoe-Silver Lake

Abby Anderson hammered four ace serves to lead Sibley East to a victory over Glencoe-Silver Lake. Scores from the match were 27-25, 25-23.

Anderson, among the serving leaders for the Wolverines this season, made good on all 14 of her serve attempts. Dani Stien was 11 of 11 from the stripe with one ace.

Missy Trebesch recorded six winning spikes for the Wolverines while Andrea Bauer and Tara Dietz combined for 33 digs.

vs. Nicollet

Sibley East’s opened tournament play by splitting two games with Nicollet. The Wolverines won game one 25-21 but lost the second tilt 25-22.

Stacia Becker and Dani Stien were a combined 19 of 19 serving with three aces. Stien also contributed six kills and two blocks.

Andrea Bauer led all Wolverines with seven kills. Kaili Schwirtz added 12 assists for Sibley East.
