Volleyballers get early lead but can’t hang on against Mayer Lutheran

A strong start wasn’t enough for Sibley East’s volleyballers Thursday. They fell 3-1 in Minnesota River Conference (MRC) action at Mayer Lutheran.

Chip Wolverton’s Wolverines went toe-to-toe with the highly-touted Crusaders in the opening game and pulled out a 25-22 victory.

Mayer Lutheran, still alive in the chase for an MRC crown, bounced back with three straight wins. Scores from those games were 25-18, 25-19, 25-17.

“We played well against another elite team again and game one is a testament to that,” coach Wolverton said. “We have the ability to win these games. Now, we need to develop the consistency to pull off the victory.”

Senior Tara Dietz was Sibley East’s top server in the contest. She was 15 of 16 from the line with two aces.

Abby Anderson continued her solid serving for Sibley East. She made good on all eleven of her serve attempts.

Anderson, a senior, also powered the Sibley East defense with 24 digs. Kirsten Nienaber chased down 16 digs for the Wolverines.

Sibley East net play was highlighted by Dani Stien and Andrea Bauer. They cranked out eight and seven kills respectively. Bauer also contributed two defensive blocks.

Senior Kaili Schwirtz led the Wolverine setting game with 15 assists. Dietz added eleven set assists for Sibley East.

Sibley East, 7-7-2 overall and 1-3 in the conference, will host league leading Jordan on Thursday. The Lady Wolverines will also play at home on Monday, October 9th against Minnesota Valley Lutheran.
