Tennis team ends regular season in fine fashion
October 6th, 2006Sibley East’s tennis team closed out its regular season by tripping host Holy Family 4-3 in Minnesota River Conference (MRC) play.
A sweep in doubles play and a spectacular win by Whitney Trocke at #1 singles led the Wolverines to victory.
“It was a great match and I’m very proud of the girls,” Sibley East head coach Chad Bachman said. “This was a good way to end conference play.”
Bachman said he was especially happy for Trocke who won her fourth straight MRC match. The senior defeated Holy Family sophomore Maddie Thiese 7-5, 4-6, 7-5. Thiese was previously unbeaten in conference play.
“It was great to see Whitney close out conference play with four straight wins,” Bachman said. “She is playing some great tennis and has been a leader for our team.”
Sibley East won all three doubles matches in straight sets. Wolverines Evie Swanson and Kayla Trocke netted another victory at #1 doubles. The Sibley East tandem defeated a pair of Holy Family sophomores 6-2, 6-1.
Wolverines Courtney Nienaber and Ashley Thomes were victorious at #2 doubles. Sibley East’s ninth-grade duo tripped Holy Family sophomores Kate Pool and Amy Forbes 6-4, 6-1.
It was a more competitive match, but the #3 doubles tilt also went in favor of Sibley East. Posting the win were Wolverines Crystal Doering and Alisha Schuneman. They were 7-6, 6-3 winners.
Suffering setbacks in singles play were Wolverines Rie Nygaard (6-2, 6-1), Alayna Osborne (7-5, 6-3), and Linnea Swanson (6-0, 6-2).
Sibley East finished third in the MRC standings with a 4-4 mark. The Lady Wolverines close out the regular season with a 5-14 record.
Tournament play begins Thursday for Sibley East. A site and an opponent is yet to be determined.
The Section 2A individual tournament starts Monday, October 16th at St. Peter.
