New voting machine available at polling places

September 7th, 2006

A new AutoMARK voter assist terminal will be offered at polling places in Sibley County for the primary and general elections.

Sibley County received a state grant to purchase the voting machines, to help come into compliance with the Help America Vote Act. The autoMARK voter assist terminals are said to “guarantee an optical scan balloting device that will capture voter intent,” according to Auditor Lisa Pfarr.

These machines allow the voters to choose their candidates and will automatically mark the ballot for them. It also gives voters an opportunity to review their ballot after it is marked to make sure they chose the candidates of their choice.

Voters will not be required to use the AutoMARK voter assist terminal. There will also be optical scan ballots available, where the voters will fill in the ovals and then feed the ballot into the precinct ballot counter.
