New Auburn water treatment plant construction to begin next month

June 21st, 2006

Construction on New Auburn’s water treatment plant and water tower projects is expected to begin in two to three weeks.

Eugene Grack, city clerk, said that construction on the community’s new water treatment plant is scheduled to begin in early July, after the Fire Department hosts a combine demolition derby on July 8.

DiMar Construction of Excelsior submitted the low bid on the water treatment facility at $950,000.

Construction on the elevated water storage tank (water tower) is scheduled to begin this fall. According to Grack, footings will be completed in September or October, with tower construction to begin in November.

The low bid for the water tower was submitted by General Construction Services, Stillwater, for $439,000.

Both projects are scheduled for completion by June 15, 2007.

Financing details are expected to be determined in early July, Grack said. The projects have been given high priority by the State of Minnesota which qualifies New Auburn for 1.1% interest loans over a 20-year period. In addition, there is a possibility that New Auburn could qualify for a Disadvantaged Cities Grant of up to $500,000.

The new water tower will have a capacity of 100,000 gallons. The city presently uses a 20,000 gallon steel storage tank.

New Auburn’s $1.389 million projects are the result of testing that showed the community’s water supply contained more arsenic than standard levels allow.
